Ditch life?
Although dried out, something has been eating the shoots in the ditch running through the centre of the floodplain
Further down the ditch, there is more water and I think I heard something move for cover. There do seems to be more signs of feeding and burrows. Definitely a place to come back to.
There are droppings in that top photo. What's the scale? They do look a lot like water vole (unless they're too small, in which case they'd be field vole).
The scale question is a good one and I should follow your example of using a reference. Unfortunately, getting out of the ditch may be problematic. Please see my latest post for the possible explanation.
